Sarah Mercer: Why we should put compassion at the heart of language education

This webinar proposes that contemporary language education needs to have compassion at its core. Compassion can inform both HOW we teach as well as WHAT we teach. Together, we will reflect on how to build and model compassion in the relationships we foster in class. Next, we consider how to encourage students to generate ideas and take action in their local and global communities demonstrating compassion for others and the planet; all the while working through the medium of whichever language they are learning.

Learning to communicate and connect with the world around them is typically the main goal for language education. In this webinar, we discuss specific ways in which we can sustainably move towards achieving this aim by placing compassion at the heart of language education.

Some of the topics touched upon include:

  • Teacher-learner relationships that embody trust, care and inclusivity
  • Social-emotional learning and empathy among learners
  • Teaching self-compassion and wellbeing literacy
  • Compassion for others, including global citizenship education and social justice

Eco literacy, sustainable living. and compassion for the natural world
