Meet Elif Altali: Eaquals Teacher Award Recipient 2025

Teaching is more than just a profession—it’s a passion, a calling, and a lifelong journey of learning. Few embody this better than Elif Altali, the recipient of this year’s Eaquals Teacher Award. With an unwavering dedication to education and an inspiring career path, Elif stands out as a teacher who truly makes a difference in the lives of her students.

We sat down with Elif to learn more about her journey, her inspirations, and what winning this award means to her.

How did you feel when you found out you were the recipient of this year’s Eaquals Teacher Award?

I was thrilled! I received the notification during a school meeting, quickly took a screenshot, and shared it with my friends. We screamed with joy…quietly! By the end, my coordinator noticed and announced it to the room, and everyone cheered—it was one of my happiest meetings ever!

Could you tell us about your teaching career and what it means for you to work at an Eaquals-accredited school?

I started teaching in 2016, initially as a student-teacher to support myself financially. Since then, I’ve taught at various levels, from kindergarten to university, in both public and private schools across Türkiye. I’ve also had opportunities to teach abroad through international internship programs.

Working in an Eaquals-accredited school gives me a sense of legitimacy and pride. Accreditation signifies quality and excellence, ensuring that both strengths and areas for improvement are recognized. Eaquals provides valuable insights and objective feedback, which is essential in an ever-evolving field like education.

What led you to a career in teaching? Was there a moment when you knew this was your path?

Teaching was always the career I aspired to, and unlike many kids who change their minds, I never did. My passion for it only deepened over the years, especially growing up in a family with several teachers.

Is there someone who inspires you? What advice would you give to new teachers?

My biggest inspiration is my father, who passed away when I was 12. He always dreamed of his six children having successful careers, and he saw teaching as one of the most respected professions. I didn’t want to let him down, and that has driven me to be the best teacher I can be.

To new teachers, my advice is simple: if you’re not open to constant change, this job might not be for you. Teaching is dynamic, and your mood and energy can directly impact your students. Adaptability and a positive attitude are key!

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I am currently writing my PhD dissertation on an AI framework for language teachers and a course design for preservice ELT teachers. My goal is to complete it in the next two years and eventually become a successful associate professor in my field. Beyond academics, I hope to have a family and experience parenting, curious to see how it compares to teaching!

Elif’s story is a testament to the dedication and passion that great teachers bring to their work. We are thrilled to celebrate her achievements and to have her join us at the Eaquals Conference in Malta. We hope that these three days of professional development, collaboration, and inspiration will contribute even more to her already remarkable journey.

Congratulations, Elif!
