Isil Ozdemir: Integrating Digital Media Literacy into Language Teaching: Engaging Students Through Sustainability Practices

In an era defined by rapid technological advancements and global challenges, integrating digital media literacy into language teaching has become imperative. This presentation explores innovative practices for embedding digital media literacy in English language classrooms, with a particular focus on sustainability. By linking language instruction to critical media analysis, students can develop essential 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, creativity, and digital proficiency while engaging with pressing global issues.

The proposed practices include guiding students in deconstructing media messages, analyzing the rhetoric of sustainability campaigns, and creating their own digital content aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through these activities, students not only enhance their language skills but also develop critical awareness of environmental and social challenges. For instance, analyzing sustainability advertisements or global campaigns equips students to recognize persuasive techniques and reflect on the impact of communication strategies. Creating digital content, such as infographics or blog posts, allows students to articulate their own perspectives on sustainability issues effectively.

This presentation highlights the transformative potential of integrating media literacy and sustainability into language teaching. Attendees will gain practical strategies to design engaging activities that inspire critical engagement, enhance linguistic proficiency, and promote a socially conscious perspective in today’s interconnected world.
